Crochet Geometry

Part 4: Other Applications and Notes

This is an incredibly structured overview of this technique. As such, most of the “rules” I’ve set out here are really just guidelines. If you want to put all the decreases for your spikes on one side, make different spikes have different heights, or anything else please do so! There are so many things I still want to experiment with using this idea, and the more ideas out there the better!

You can also use flat faces in conjunction with this. One of the things I really like about this technique is that it’s no-sew, and I haven’t yet figured out a good way to make no-sew geometry with all flat faces. You can, however, make flat faces starting with a magic circle, and attach them to each other using “spiked faces” like what I’ve described in this post. You can see it in the stars below, which are essentially pentagonal prisms with the square faces spiked (and they’re SO FUN TO MAKE). These stars will have their own tutorial/pattern eventually.

I actually initially started using this as a way to split rounds to make leg-like structures. To do this, crochet part way around an existing round, start your fsc’s, then skip some of the stitches around the existing round and work back to the start. This cuts off a smaller loop and you can work it as a leg.

There are probably (definitely) other applications that I haven’t spelled out here, so play around with this technique and see what you can use it for!

Conclusion

That’s my crochet geometry tutorial! I hope that was useful, and if any of that was confusing or unclear, please ask questions in the comments. I’ll do my best to respond to them, and maybe make a follow-up post about it.

If you found this helpful or interesting, consider donating to my Ko-Fi! I put a TON of work into this tutorial (as well as everything else on my site and YouTube channel), and donations help keep the site running!

Thanks so much for reading all the way to the end, and I hope to see you around!
